There are two main cockroaches to be found, the German and Oriental.
The cockroach’s pronotum is yellow, with two dark brown stripes. The cockroach’s wings are as long as the body or slightly overlapping on males. Cockroaches have long antennae and spiny legs with two anal cerci visible on females.
Life cycle:
Cockroach eggs: Each ootheca (egg case) is around 6mm long and contains 30–40 eggs. Females carry the ootheca until just before it hatches, some 2–4 weeks after laying.Cockroach nymphs will hatch and pass through 5-7 moults before reaching maturity.
The speed of development is heavily influenced by the ambient temperature. Adult cockroaches emerge between 2.5 and 6 months later, and usually live for around 6 months.
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is a small species of cockroach, typically about 1.1 to 1.6 cm (0.43 to 0.63 in) long.
In colour it varies from tan to almost black, and it has two dark, roughly parallel, streaks on the pronotum running anteroposteriorly from behind the head to the base of the wings.
Although Blattella germanica has wings, it can barely fly, although it may glide when disturbed.
Of the few species of cockroach that are domestic pests, it probably is the most widely troublesome example.
It is very closely related to the Asian cockroach, and to the casual observer the two appear nearly identical and may be mistaken for each other.
However, the Asian cockroach is attracted to light and can fly rather like a moth, which the German cockroach can not.
Oriental Cockroach
Blatta orientalis
Adults – 17 – 30 mm long
Oriental Cockroaches are a dark brown almost shiny black. Oriental Cockroaches have their head tucked beneath pronotum, long antennae and spiny legs with 2 anal cerci.
Oriental Cockroach wings are undeveloped in female but on the male they cover two-thirds of his abdomen.Oriental Cockroach eggs: ootheca (around 5 laid at intervals by female) each contain on average 16 eggs. These are deposited when they are fully formed in harbourage.
Incubation is 6–12 weeks later dependent on temperature. Oriental Cockroach Nymphs: progress through 7-10 moults before reaching maturity. Developing into adults may take up to 18 months. Oriental Cockroach adults can live up to 6 months.
Health risk
Oriental cockroaches can spread various human-disease organisms by walking over food and preparation areas.
